Matt Newchurch, DDG President

Matthew Newchurch, a native of Thibodaux, earned his masters degree in Business Administration from Nicholls State University in 2005. While working on his masters at Nicholls, Newchurch liked the flexibility that the program and faculty had to offer since he had increasing responsibilities at work and at home with his family. After meeting with the administration to discuss integration of prior professional experience and other masters business credits with Nicholls curriculum, he knew Nicholls was for him. He said, “I then realized that this unique blend of personal service and flexibility was exactly what I needed to achieve my educational goals in a timely manner.”

Newchurch is the President of Duplantis Design Group (DDG) where he monitors the business metrics of operations. He said, “While I learned more about these metrics during the early part of my career, I quickly observed that while the ultimate goal is often the same, engineers and architects often do not speak the same language as accountants and financial experts when it comes to their respective professions.” At Nicholls, with an engineering degree he was able to serve as a translator in his business courses. He said that this skill helps to ensure that internal reports and evaluations that they provide to managers align with what they need from a business perspective.

Newchurch is responsible for day-to-day operating activities of the firm, which requires implementation, oversight and enforcement of policies, procedures, protocols, and controls that govern the operations of the firm. He serves as the continuous link between the firm’s design professionals and DDG’s teams of accounting, administration, information technology, business development and human resource professionals. He also closely monitors the firm’s project workload throughout the Gulf South to support DDG’s commitment to first-class client service, but it also allows him to keep a pulse on the latest industry standards and practices in the A/E/C community. He said, “With 5 locations across the Gulf Coast and over 70 employees, DDG has provided civil engineering, architecture and landscape architecture services for almost 20 years and proudly calls Thibodaux, LA our home.” Newchurch said that Nicholls provided a foundation of success for him, his family, and his friends, and Nicholls has produced well-educated and personable professionals who support critical functions of the business.
