The St. Tammany Parish comprehensive plan, New Directions 2025, describes an alternative smart-growth rooted in historic and traditional principles that will increase the parish’s economic potential. With a “Village-in-the-Woods” vision, several gateway overlay districts were established to enhance the entryways into the Economic Development Districts (EDD) along I-12 interchanges. DDG was engaged to develop the initial enhancement concepts and construction documents for the first two EDD gateways.
It was imperative that these initial projects be implemented in a way that demonstrated the “value” and economic benefit to the area, and the design approach required a “return on investment” for community buy-in. With an extremely limited time frame, DDG began conceptual design, obtained permits from LA DOTD, and finalized construction documents for public bidding within an extraordinary two months.
As the project awaits the parish construction bid process, DDG has offered the following economic ROI of the project:
Native plantings and meadows will reduce annual mowing expenses by 72.3%
Stormwater quality will be improved by 50%
Peak flow of stormwater during an event will be reduced by 50%
Pollinators and wildlife will be increased by 200%
Research has demonstrated that 74% of the public prefer to patronize businesses with landscape enhancements
