DDG is providing architectural and civil engineering services for the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter Project. Our team assisted Lafourche Parish in developing a plan for the project by thoughtfully placing a new building to connect the many accessory buildings on site. While each building offers a necessary function to the shelter’s operation, the location of the new building was intentional to develop the site as a campus and accommodate animal intake, surgery, potential adoptions, public visitors, and staff access.
Remaining conscious of the parish’s budget, the new, larger, building incorporates resilient building materials for longevity of the structure under such heavy use and as an additional line of defense for future hurricane or storm related events. A new parking area will facilitate public access and a larger fenced in grass yard will create separate public and private outdoor spaces for the shelter.
DDG’s design team focused heavily on the interiors of the building to assist the parish in creating a welcoming environment for those searching for their new pets, and animals in search of their forever home. The interior design of incorporates bright colors, different material textures in the lobby, and a bench area with windows for viewing into the cat area, while keeping the safety and separation of the staff and public in mind.
The shelter utilizes separate mechanical systems to ensure a healthy separation between feline and canine areas. It has a large utility area with storage for linens, a private office, a large bullpen space for multiple cubicles, small break area, and an exam room.
DDG’s design team hopes the modern and updated facility will provide comfort for animals and increase the adoption rate.
