Located in Downtown Houma along Belanger street, this project has transformed a public street into a pedestrian-oriented community space open to merchants, festivals, and downtown events. The Rotary Club of Houma commemorated 100 years of community service and contributed to the project as a centennial celebration and gift to the community. DDG assisted Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government (TPCG) and the Rotary Club of Houma with the development of a downtown parklet concept. An accurate survey of topographic, boundary, and underground utilities prepared by DDG’s Survey team was paramount in ensuring that the proposed improvements would co-exist within a historic street with numerous infrastructure adaptations over the years. Our landscape architects, then created a concept of accentuating the ground plane with etched gears, reminiscent of the logo of the Rotary Club and the gears of the classical industrial machinery. To encompass an overhead element to create a sense of place, DDG designed a brick colonnade matching the adjacent historic architectural vocabulary with steel arches spanning across the width of the street with festoon lights strung between the arches to create a special ambiance.
